Curriculum Vitae
Tamás Tóth,1967, painter

He was born in 1967, in Miskolc (Hungary).
1985 - completed my studies of decorative painter at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts crafts. The same year I was awarded the Domanovszki Endre prize.

1989 - took a diploma in painter education at the Budapest Academy Fine Arts. My masters, Kokas Ignác and Gábor Dienes had difficulties with me just like me with myself. The old uncle "náci" wrote into one of my guest books the best description of my unruly character:

"I know sometimes it is hard to suffer yourself but believe me it is worth..."

After finishing the master course and handing in an application with my paintings I got to Kazincbarcika. We edited a magazine, a tvchannel, run a course of arts, painted, made music I had fun for a couple of years, which can be seen on my active creative work and some well-arranged exhibitions.

The political change (1990-91) brought a dramatic change in values at every level of society so did it in me. I could not give a better description of myself in my early twenties than the following quotation from a catalogue of one exhibitions:

"painting is not the most important thing in my life. Freedom, revolting and constant experimentation is the thing, I think, I would not be able to create without."

Changing profession from time to time, struggling, experimenting, ups and downs of life tested me, and my power in the years after. Numerous re-starts, failures, and succes, special situations and adventures spiced my financial struggling through bitter days. Comparing the number of paintings and years that passed by, this period was not very productive let alone the numerous workplaces i had. A graphic artist friend of mine (Yoka) remarked very aptly at the introduction of one my exhibitions:

"In the history of art it was maybe juan miro, the painter having a common name had and still have many of his follow countrymen. In Barcelona still today many bicycle repairmen, personal assistants, taxi drivers, car dealers, educators, pizza boys, drummers, construction managers, brokers bear the name of this world famous painter, very proudly, I think."

The genuine wording and weird choice of topic, which is far from the course of life assigned to artists gives similarity in the clearly separable creative periods. Several years of interruptions between creative periods and leaving profession distorted (sometimes without precedents, and seemingly without continuity) the character (unfortunately sometimes also the quality) of each coming stylistic period. Here comes a quotation to justify myself:

" It is hard for me to find permanence in my rambling thoughts maybe simply because there are not any..."

Many times (just like others) I think to myself "If I should taken an other way, when" I do not think anymore today there will ever be an answer to all my questions. Earlier I had the idea that to reach the goal and have it in the shortest possible time is the essence of life that is what keeps the world moving. The winner takes it all, and things like that.

Today I see things differently. The way itself is the goal. From the mid-nineties criticism of society, fallibility of man, searching for the essence of life and my own course of life characterized my paintings. A journalist-editor friend of mine (Orosz József) said at the introduction of my exhibition in the Opera House:

"I envy my friend, tamás. I envy him developing the right for being free into a skill through his paintings using the recipe of his masters even if he fights over numbers with evils on the top of a huge mountain of gold, power and money."

these days I am living a more peaceful life, since I have been raising a family, this stable background, the first wonders of a little life (my son, Farkas and my daughter, Hédi) provides me more wisdom, stable values and braveness, which is reflected in my work of art.
